“Landmark: Erie’s Bicentennial Tower” is a documentary film produced and directed by Patrick (Lou) Richards and Michael A. Kraus, released in 2022 by WQLN PBS (public broadcasting in Erie, Pennsylvania). It explores the history and significance of the Bicentennial Tower, an iconic 187-foot observation tower on Erie’s bayfront at Dobbins Landing.
The film details how the tower project nearly didn’t happen due to various hurdles during a period of civic decline in Erie. It highlights the efforts of backers, planners, architects, engineers, and construction workers who overcame challenges in record time to complete it in 1995–1996 as a legacy gift for the city’s bicentennial (marking 200 years since its founding).
The narrative portrays the tower as a symbol of pride, renewal, and possibility, kickstarting the renaissance of Erie’s waterfront. It includes archival footage, interviews, and insights into the controversy and drama surrounding the project.
